No, you cannot use your parent’s NIN for the registration process, we advise that you visit a NIN registration center immediately to register your own. The registration centers usually have a banner with NIMC written on them.

What is the NIN used for?

The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual into the National Identity Database and is also used as a valid means of establishing or verifying individual identity.

How long does it take for the NIN to be ready?

It usually takes between 1-5 working days for your NIN to be ready after registration.

How do I confirm my NIN number?

You can check your NIN Slip. It has your 11 Digit Number in the top left corner, on the second row. You can also dial *346# and press 1, please note that you will be charged 20 Naira to check your NIN number.

I’ve registered for the National ID card before, do I have to re-register because of JAMB UTME/DE?

No, the registration process is one-time only. If you already have a National ID, you don’t need to apply again for JAMB or any other purpose. Once registered, you can use your National ID card/NIN number for all purposes.

Must Direct Entry (DE) applicants register for NIN too?

Yes, it also applies to them.

Will I be Issued NIN (National ID Card) if I am less than 16 years?

While you can register for the National ID if you’re aged 15 or under, minors are not issued cards until they are 16 years old.

If the child is under the age of 16, the parent/guardian’s NIN is required.
